Admissions Process

Students are admitted to the program only in the fall semester. The initial application is made to the University of Missouri-Columbia Graduate School. The department encourages applicants to use the online application system to submit the application and letters of recommendation. The department has instant access to applications submitted through this process. Additional supporting documents are required by the department and, in most cases, should be sent directly to the department.

Application Fee
The Graduate School application fee is $45(US) for domestic applicants and $60 (US) for nonresident international applicants. There is no department application fee. Fees can be paid through the Graduate School's online application. No action will be taken on your admission file until your Graduate School application has been submitted and your application fee is received by the Graduate School.

Timeline
Please submit the Graduate School application, with the uploaded personal statement and department application, along with completed letters of recommendation and transcripts by December 5.

If the personal statement and Department application are not uploaded before Graduate Application submission on December 5th, please mail them, along with samples of work, to the Department by December 15.

All applications to this department that are completed by the deadline will be evaluated by our separate admissions committees. Notification of the results of this evaluation, including offers of admission and financial support, will be made on or about March 15.

Application Checklist:

  • Graduate School Application -- Apply online
  • Department Application -- Upload to the online application if before December 5th submission of application, otherwise please mail. Available in several formats:[pdf] [Word] [rtf]
  • Transcripts -- Two copies of each post-high school transcript are required. They should be sent directly from the registrar of that school: one to the Graduate School and one to the department, using the addresses above.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation: Please use the Online Application Recommendation System. Recommendations from three references are required. To register your recommenders in the online system, (1) Go to the "Recommendations" tab on the Online Application Form, (2)Enter the recommender’s personal information with correct email address on the registration page, and (3) read and mark one of the waiver statements on each Letter of Reference.

Your recommender will receive an automated email with instructions to log in to the Online Recommendation. Your recommender will have access to the Letter of Reference Form and the ability to submit the recommendation directly to us. If your recommender is experiencing technical difficulties, please ask the recommender to contact ApplyYourself Technical Support directly by clicking on the button labeled "Tech Support."

After your recommender submits the recommendation, both you and your recommender will receive an email confirmation. Please make sure that all of your recommenders have submitted the online Letters of Reference before you submit the application and BEFORE the appropriate application deadline. Letters of Reference submitted after the application is submitted to the Graduate School may not be included with your application file, unless you contact the Department when they are submitted.

Preferably, the references should be from professors who can comment in detail about your qualifications for graduate study in psychology.

  • Personal Statement -- Upload to the online application if before December 5th submission of application, otherwise please mail. A personal statement might include a description of your career objectives and your specific interests in psychology. You should indicate past research activities, and the areas of research activity in which you are particularly interested, as well as indicating what faculty research interests are parallel to your own.
  • Test Scores -- GRE scores should be sent directly from the Testing Center to the department. The department requires GRE scores in Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing. The Advanced Psychology test is strongly recommended by some of our Emphasis Areas, but is not required. We only accept official GRE reports sent directly from the testing service to us. Applicants are cautioned against taking the GRE too late since the scores may not be available before our deadline. While no specific minimum score is required, at least 75% of recent successful applicants scored higher than 510 on Verbal and 620 on Quantitative with a 4.0 in Analytical Writing. TOEFL scores should be sent directly from the Testing Center to the Graduate School.
