Information for Prospective Graduate Students

International Students

All applicants, including international applicants, must submit GRE scores. Information regarding the GRE can be obtained from Educational Testing Service.

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores, sent directly from the testing service provider. If an applicant has completed one year of full-time post-secondary (college-level) study within the last two years in a country where English is the native language, the TOEFL or IELTS score is strongly recommended, but not required.

The minimum total TOEFL scores for graduate admission to MU are 500(paper-based), 173 (computer-based) or 63 (internet-based). The minimum total IELTS score is 5.5 academic score.

Codes for the TOEFL are: University of Missouri 6875, Clinical Psychology 93, Cognitive and Developmental Psychology 58, Social Psychology 79, Other Psychology 08.

Whether or not the TOEFL scores is waived, according to University policy, all teaching assistants who received their elementary and secondary education in a country where English was not the official language must participate in a language screening upon admission to the program. Also, international students may not be appointed to teaching assistantships in their first semester on campus. The International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP) is responsible for ensuring that all teaching assistants and graduate instructors who are not native speakers of English speak well enough to ensure communication in the classroom.

Applicants for whom the Graduate School application fee constitutes a hardship should contact the Department. A limited fund may be available for assistance in paying this fee. Please contact the Department's Graduate Student Services office by phone at 573-882-0838, or by email gradpsych@missouri.edu.
