Areas of Study and Research - Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods

Objectives

The objective of the statistics and methods minor is to (a) acquaint students with state-of-the-art statistical and methodological procedures, (b) give students the skills to handle complex problems in data analysis and research design, and (c) prepare students to teach elementary and advanced courses in statistics and methods.

Successful completion of the minor requirements will be acknowledged on the student's transcript.

Eligibility

The minor is open to Ph.D. students in any department. Requirements vary by major department within the broad framework set by the Graduate School and Graduate Faculty Senate.

For the Psychological Sciences Department, students admitted to the doctoral program who are in good standing within a training area may elect to receive a minor in psychological statistics and methods. Typically, students will make their intention to fulfill the minor requirements known prior to the beginning of their second year of study.

Advisement Procedures

When a student formally requests admission to the minor, he or she will also request a minor-area adviser who is a consenting member of the Psychological Statistics and Methods Coordinating Committee. Together, the student and adviser will complete a Minor Plan of Study outlining the courses to be taken and the schedule for their completion. The Minor Plan of Study must be approved by the committee of coordinating faculty. This plan will then be countersigned by the student's major faculty adviser. It is the responsibility of the student to inform both advisers of any changes in the plan or failure to meet requirements.

Requirements

For the Psychological Sciences Department, the requirements are as follows:

Students receiving the minor must complete the following courses:

Psych 8710 (419) General Linear Models in Psychology I
Psych 8720 (420) General Linear Models in Psychology II
Psych 9710 (421) Advanced Techniques in Psychological Statistics
Psych 9720 (431) Latent Variable Models

A grade of B or better is required in all four courses.

Students must complete one additional course from the following courses:

Psych 9710 (404) The Literature Review
Psych 9520 (413) Psychometrics
Psych 9715 (430) Multilevel Modeling
Psych 9735 (475) Psychological Process Models
Psych 9330 (486) Applied Research Methods
Psych 9001 (401) Advanced Structural Equation Modeling
Psych 9001 (401) Categorical Data Analysis for Psychological Sciences
Psych 9001 (401) Scaling/Clustering

Additional courses for the minor must be taken in the Department of Statistics, the Department of Mathematics, or may be fulfilled by courses that are primarily statistic or methods-oriented in other departments or schools.

The exact nature of these courses will depend upon the interests and background of the student and will be chosen in consultation with the student's minor-area adviser. Statistics 7510 (385) and Statistics 7530 (395) cannot be used to fulfill the minor requirements.

Procedures and Forms for the Statistics Minor

The minor is open to PhD students in any department. A total of seven courses in statistics and methods is required. Doctoral students in psychology or statistics must take at least two of these seven courses outside their major department. Students electing the minor from departments other than psychology or statistics must take five courses within these two departments, at least two of which are in statistics and two in psychology. All courses must be at the 7000, 8000, or 9000 level. Specific procedures and requirements vary by major department.

A student formally requesting admission to the minor also will request a minor-area adviser who is a consenting member of the Psychological Statistics and Methods Coordinating Committee. (As of the W05 semester, the members of the Coordinating Committee are Professors Adam Hafdahl, Jennifer Krull, and Phillip Wood of the Department of Psychological Sciences, and Professors Dongchu Sun and Farroll Tim Wright of the Statistics Department.) Together, the student and advisor will complete a minor plan of study outlining the courses to be taken and the schedule for their completion. The minor plan of study must be approved by the committee of coordinating faculty. This plan will then be countersigned by the student’s major faculty advisor. It is the responsibility of the student to inform both advisers of any changes in the plan or failure to meet requirements.

After the plan of study has been approved any course changes in the plan must be approved by the student’s major adviser, by the student’s minor-area adviser and by the Psychological Statistics and Methods Coordinating Committee (MPSM Form-2).

After successfully completing the courses listed in the plan of study, the student will submit a "request for certification" (MPSM Form-3) to the Coordinator for the Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods, who will notify the Graduate School that the student has completed the requirements for the Minor in Psychological Statistics and Methods and that the student’s transcripts should indicate that accomplishment.
