Accomplished Higher Ed and Science Professionals Zoom In to Become Professors for a Day

A webinar was held with two accomplished alumni as guest speakers and Professors for a Day. This event took place on February 2, 2021, in the 5 to 6 PM time slot reserved for Psi Chi and Psychology Club meetings.

One Professor for a Day, Ann J. Korschgen (Psychology, MU, 1971), was formerly Director of Career Planning and Interim Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, and former Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at the University of Missouri-Columbia. She co-authored the book, Majoring in Psych? Career Options for Psychology Undergraduates, which has been in print (with updated versions) for over 25 years. She realized that there was not a good guide for Psychology majors and, reflecting back on her own uncertainty about her career path during her years after college, she wrote the book with a colleague.

The other Professor for a Day, David M. Stonner (Psychology, MU, 1970), was Director of the Office of International Science and Engineering at the National Science Foundation. At a point before that, he was a research psychologist who worked at the Office of Naval Research. Then he decided to take a fellowship with the American Association for the Advancement of Science on Capitol Hill, entering the world of politics.

Both guest speakers described how they needed to blend their work life with their personal life, being flexible in the process; and both of them mentioned that among the most useful aspects of training in psychology were professional social skills: being able to work well in groups, listening carefully to people, understanding their perspectives, and communicating with them effectively as a result. Both speakers in their separate careers were fortunate to have travelled around the world and to have met up with, and interacted with, some of the most influential world leaders. The webinar offered advice not only for making contacts and finding employment, but also for taking the risks needed to have a satisfying career.
