Our department welcomes international students.  International students are eligible for full financial support including assistantships and many campus fellowships.  Additional information for international students, including information on immigration and visas, can be found from the Mizzou International Programs office.

All non-native English-speaking applicants are required to provide proof of English language ability.  As proof, the University of Missouri Graduate School accepts scores from one of the following testing services:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)  Institutional TOEFL (TOEFL ITP) results from schools or institutions other than the University of Missouri are not acceptable.
  • Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE)
  • Cambridge English C1 Advanced
  • Duolingo English Test

Our department does not require test scores that are higher than the minimum university English proficiency requirements. The Mizzou Graduate School's information for international applicants includes information on sending test scores and language proficiency test waivers.

Whether or not the TOEFL score is waived, according to University policy, all teaching assistants who received their elementary and secondary education in a country where English was not the official language must participate in a language screening upon admission to the program. The International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP) is responsible for ensuring that all teaching assistants and graduate instructors who are not native speakers of English speak well enough to ensure communication in the classroom.
