Research Excellence

A core mission of the University of Missouri is the production of knowledge that enhances understanding of the world and improves people’s lives. This mission is reflected in the four core values of Mizzou: Respect, Responsibility, Discovery, and Excellence.

Faculty in the Department of Psychological Sciences are among the most productive researchers both at Mizzou and in their field. They discover and disseminate knowledge on a range of topics related to the mind, brain, and behavior, including:

  • Raising a healthy and loving family
  • The causes and consequences of addiction
  • Developing fulfilling relationships and meaning across the lifespan
  • Understanding mental health conditions, such as autism, schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression
  • Decision-making processes and their effects on health and well-being
  • The neuroscience of healthy and disordered psychological functioning
  • Overcoming problems related to intolerance, intergroup relations, and aggression
  • Academic achievement by our children and the emergence of their cognitive abilities
  • Memory and its changes over the human lifespan, from childhood through the twilight years

Research Labs

Our research labs are divided in the following sections:

Clinical
Cognition and Neuroscience
Developmental
Quantitative
Social/Personality

Research Programs and Centers

Many of our faculty are affiliated with one or more research centers and programs, which are intended to facilitate collaborative science and the availability of resources to support discovery and dissemination.

Research achievements

  • Our faculty members have published more than 400 scientific papers, nearly 100 book chapters, and 12 books in the past six years.
  • Our faculty members were cited in the scientific literature more than 42,000 times in the six years from 2007 to 2012.
  • Our faculty members have been awarded over $15 million of direct research support in the last five years. At present, around 70% of the faculty members in our department have funded external grants.
  • Our programs are ranked consistently in the top 50 among psychology departments nationwide.
  • We have an NIH-funded training grant for graduate students and postdocs in addictions. Additionally, several students, with department support, have been awarded their own NIH NRSA predoctoral grants.
