Breaking the Prejudice Habit (Teaching)

“We wish to facilitate others' education by providing these teaching tools. Those who recognize themselves as educators understand how well this fits with a place called the Virginia Ball Center for Creative Inquiry. Sometimes we learn best by reading, studying, and writing; sometimes, we learn best by doing; sometimes, we learn best from our failures. In all cases, we can better understand ourselves and others when we reach out to teach someone else what we have learned.”

Action Teaching: Social Justice and Prejudice Reduction

“For 10 years, Social Psychology Network held an international action teaching award competition with two main goals: (1) to honor creative action teaching, and (2) to freely disseminate effective action teaching techniques to a wide audience. See award-winning examples.”

Intersectional and Privilege Pedagogies

“For all of the educators out there working to bring critical analysis of intersectionality, privilege, and social justice into the classroom, this page was/is created to support your work. This resources page is a living space growing and improving over time to meet pedagogical needs.”

Diversity Resources for Psychology Courses

“This is not an exhaustive list. When a resource is applicable to more than one course, it is cited under all those courses. However, we recommend that readers review resources listed under other courses for additional references that may also be applicable. Textbooks included were published in 2002 or later. We thank Barbara Noel Dowds, Jennifer Milliken, and Kathy Ong for their assistance.

Teaching Tolerance

From the site, “A project of the Southern Poverty Law Center, Teaching Tolerance was founded in 1991 to prevent the growth of hate…. Our mission is to reduce prejudice, improve intergroup relations, and support equitable school experiences for our nation’s children. We believe that schools must educate all students for full participation in a diverse democracy…. Teaching Tolerance provides free resources to educators—teachers, administrators, counselors, and other practitioners—who work with children from kindergarten through high school. Educators use our materials to supplement the curriculum, to inform their practices, and to create civil and inclusive school communities where children are respected, valued, and welcome participants.”

GLSEN

From the site, “GLSEN (pronounced "glisten") was founded in 1990 by a small, but dedicated group of teachers in Massachusetts who came together to improve an education system that too frequently allows its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) students to be bullied, discriminated against, or fall through the cracks. Over 25 years later, that small group has grown into the leading national education organization focused on ensuring safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ students.”
